About Clare

Clare has had a life-long fascination and love of all things textile! From an early age she made clothes for her dolls and then later herself and her children, developing designing, sewing and knitting skills. Cushions and quilts followed, soft toys, embroidery, spinning, weaving, felt and papermaking and millinery.

During her busy professional life as a doctor textile arts & crafts were a constant source of pleasure and relaxation. Along the way Clare studied City & Guilds qualifications in Creative Textiles - Embroidery and later Millinery.

In 2001 Clare left medicine after 21 years and started up Thistle Threads to share her love of creative textiles by teaching classes and workshops in a wide variety of topics. Clare also launched Clare Workman Designer Milliner and for a fabulous 12 years designed and made very special hats for clients from all over the world.

Clare has a particular interest in sustainable textile arts - recycling, reusing, reducing waste and encouraging organic production of cotton and reducing pollution and protecting the environment.
